KEN M. MARKOWITZ

PRACTICE AREAS
Ken Markowitz is a founding partner of Kenney & Markowitz L.L.P. He is a civil litigator whose practice emphasizes employment and labor law, employer-employee relations, aviation, commercial litigation and drug and medical device litigation.

EXPERIENCE
Mr. Markowitz was a partner with the law offices of Fisher & Hurst in San Francisco, prior to the founding of his current firm, Kenney & Markowitz L.L.P. in 1991. Mr. Markowitz has extensive trial and appellate experience in federal and state courts. He has successfully tried cases in California, Nevada, Arizona and Texas, and has represented clients in administrative actions including FAA and NLRB proceedings. He has tried age, national origin, gender discrimination and sexual harassment cases, as well as business litigation involving claims of misappropriation of trade secrets and RICO violations. In addition, Mr. Markowitz has obtained defense verdicts in both fixed wing and rotorcraft aviation crash cases.

Mr. Markowitz regularly counsels clients in a wide variety of labor and employment matters, including workforce reductions, severance issues, management responses to organizing campaigns, contract negotiations, and matters involving statutory compliance. He has successfully handled appeals and presented oral argument before numerous state appellate courts and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. He also serves as a court-appointed arbitrator in San Francisco.

EDUCATION
Mr. Markowitz received his B.A, with distinction, from Northwestern University in 1976 and his J.D. from Golden Gate University in 1982.He served as a judicial extern for the Honorable Frank Newman, Associate Justice of the California Supreme Court.

PUBLICATIONS AND SPEAKING ENGAGEMENTS
Mr. Markowitz authored "Severance Packages For Successful Downsizing," in Employment Relations Today, Summer 1992. He also wrote a chapter on torts, in Eighteen Chapters On American Law, published in Taiwan in 1993 by Evergreen Publishing Company. Mr. Markowitz also authored "Employee Drug Testing," (1989) for airlines and aviation businesses facing the then newly-adopted federal drug testing policies for the transportation industry.

Mr. Markowitz is a frequent speaker for MCLE programs sponsored by the Bar Association of San Francisco. Among the programs he has recently presented are: Trial 101; Beyond the Basics: Advanced Legal Writing for Litigators; and Turning Interviews Into Offers.

AFFILIATIONS
Mr. Markowitz is a member of the Bar Association of San Francisco, the State Bar of California (Labor and Employment and Litigation Sections) and the American Bar Association.

ADMISSIONS
Mr. Markowitz is admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, the Federal District Courts for the Northern, Central and Eastern Districts of California, and all state courts in California.


ACTIVITIES

In his spare time, Mr. Markowitz enjoys playing the guitar, sea kayaking, and playing tennis with his teenage son.
